Lightweight Hefti!

Thanks to Dot Records (owned by Paramount Pictures at the time), an LP of this score was released, which included the memorable title song. Another Sixties sparkling gem by the wonderful Neal Hefti, who's most famous score was perhaps "The Odd Couple" (also released by Dot/Paramount the following year). Other Dot/Paramount gems at the time included "Rosemary's Baby", "Will Penny", "Blue", "No Way to Treat a Lady", "Nevada Smith" and "Sebastian". Even the score for "Cool Hand Luke" (Warner Bros.) was released on Dot. Hefti may not have gotten the recognition he deserved at the time by his fellow composers (not one Oscar nomination!), but others like Vic Mizzy, Kenyon Hopkins and Stanley Myers were also ignored by the Academy. With the passing of time, these entertainers are beginning to gain the appretiation and respect that they were so sadly denied during their greatest input of talent. I think one day very soon we are likely to see many of their shining contributions to the Swinging Sixties get the CD releases they most definitely deserve. In the mean time, most of the films that they scored are available on DVD.
