Bought this right from the theater!
by a soundtrack collector (February 17, 2006)
"Sigh"...how i love this score. One of those underrated films whose score therefore is unknown to many music (and film) lovers.

I saw this as a young teen at Radio City Music Hall on a spring/summer day, while on a 2 hour break from visiting my dad at his nearby Manhattan office. (It might have been my first solo NYC movie ever, being a kid from the suburbs.) I enjoyed the film so much, and was flabbergasted that it bombed at the box office. (When "Pirates of the Caribbean" succeeded, I felt somewhat vindicated, that modern-day audiences can enjoy a rollicking pirate movie.)

Right after leaving the majestic Radio City Music Hall auditorium (what a place to see ANY movie back then, let alone a film like this with scope), I found a nearby record store, and bought the soundtrack on the spot. Boy am I glad I did, as I don't think I ever saw it again in record stores. At times the vinyl production is a tad slipshod (warbling treble during the monkey's flute tune, and on the final track, the symphony gets muffled too)....but 95% of the vinyl LP I have of this score still works its magic.

Like my review for Jerry Goldsmith's "Explorers"...I say neglected scores like these should be revived by a symphony somewhere!
