A score deserving recognition
by
Mark Wallace (November 18, 2002)
A historical drama set in the early days of Confederation, about Louis Riel, a half Indian, half French Canadian who lead a short-lived rebellion against the government of the day. Concentrating as much on Riel’s religious beliefs, which fueled his commitment to his cause, as on the political maneuvering which eventually caused his death at the gallows, the television film was well written and well produced. McCauley responded by writing a very moving, warm score, reflecting the pious nature of the title character. Occasionally saccharine, but heartfelt, this music is worth hearing. Also included on the LP is the wonderful courtroom speech given by Raymond Cloutier (the actor who played Riel). I’m not a fan of including dialogue with film music, but this proves that there is always an exception to the rule.
