An unusual soundtrack for an unusual film
by a soundtrack collector (July 18, 2003)
The soundtrack for "Strange Brew" is certainly the oddest I've ever come upon for any film -- and I've got a lot of soundtracks! Following up the McKenzie brothers' "Great White North," Moranis and Thomas claim that "this isn't our second album." Moreless it is though. Combining the score, theme song, and film bytes with original comedy material, the duo released a hilarious album that's right on par with the film. Rants about beer, pubic hairs and Shakespeare "horking their script" abound; then they claim that "we're those guys who talk over songs and wreck 'em" as the abridged theme song begins. It's also great to hear the complete theme song, under the title "Another Strange Brew," which was cut down in the film.

Also worth mentioning is the album packaging. In addition to showcasing the fantastic artwork that appeared on the original packaging, the sleeve is pure genius. Displayed as if it were a newspaper, "The Daily Knob," it contains 7 feaux articles, a comic strip, LotoHose numbers, a "Are you a Hoser" diagram, forecast and more. Quite an ingenius piece of packaging.

The movie flopped in its initial release, but the album flopped even harder, so it seems to be very hard to find. While it would be great to get an official CD release, it'll probably never happen. However, it is available for download on several Bob and Doug McKenzie websites. For those wanting the songs and score, this isn't the greatest album. But it's a perfect companion to the film.
