Beautiful work from a truly underrated composer,
by
Alex (July 2, 2007)
"Troll" has always meant something special to me. It's a film I saw when I was very young and impressionable, and while I can recognize it's flaws today, I always get a sense of warmth and pathos when I watch it. It was also one of the first films where I noticed the music--and I'm so happy now, years later, that the wonderful folks at Intrada have released this wonderful score on CD. The opening track ("Cantos I") begins with a beautiful, lush, playful rendition of the main theme which is to be heard many times through out the CD, usually from woodwinds or various solo instruments (piano, xylophone, etc.). It's a truly beautiful theme, and that first rendition we hear of it is the best. Amongst the colorful orchestrations are lively and vaguely dark choral passages, particularly the three-minute "Cantos Profanea" which is an orchestral and choral tour-de-force; think Goldsmith's "Ave Satani" by way of Danny Elfman.
This is great film scoring. Why Richard Band isn't in the big league with composers like Zimmer, Williams, etc. is a mystery to me, and "Troll" is a score that, like all of Band's work, deserves major recognition.
