Mark Isham + A Cult Classic = Dynamite
by a soundtrack collector (January 12, 2007)
Mark Isham has always been ahead of his time, but never more so than with his soundtrack to the 1988 movie "The Beast" (Offered overseas as "The Beast Of War"). Columbia flopped on this masterpiece of a film: Poorly promoted, it only generated approx. $50K in box office revenues and promptly vanished, but not before winning one film festival award. Over time, in obscurity, the film gained a cult following, including myself. If you're familiar with Mark Isham's talent but never heard of "The Beast", you owe it to yourself to get it any way you can: Soundtrack or DVD. the music is mesmerizing, and the style doesn't condescend to its origins. The only bad part: The soundtrack is extremely hard to find. New and used LP copies can be had for between a few dollars up to $50; CD copies (If you can find one...they're DDD quality) go from $50 to $100, and people willingly pay it...for used (I paid $60 for mine, mint...a bargain). Good luck finding an unopened CD copy! So: For any and all Beast/Isham fans, this is a MUST-HAVE. Just as Columbia recently re-released The Beast on DVD (I bought ten copies and gave them away as gifts to family and friends), hopefully they will follow suit with the CD. Mortgage your K-Car if you have to....just get it.
