Captain Warbeck's Mandolin by Godwin Borg (December 23, 2004)
What Stephen Warbeck did here was to compose one of the finest and most beautiful soundtracks of 2001. The 23 tracks on this cd include Warbeck's lush orchestral score, traditional Italian songs (including 'La Donna E` Mobile' from Giuseppe Verdi's opera Rigletto) and also an Italian rendition of Schultze's 'Lilli Marlene' and everything blends beautifully like a magical symphony in this one hour long disc that evokes a wide spectrum of feelings, love passion, sadness, nostalgia and hope. There is a very sweet and appropriate use of the mandolin (as the title aptly suggests) but it's not overpowering or highlighted, it just blends in perfectly in the context of the score, just like in the film. A most deserved five out of five. A real must for lovers of good music (in particular Italian traditional 'canzoni') and of Stephen Warbeck's elegant and sophisticated, yet so warm compositions.
