Three Outstanding Releases This Year!
by
Thomas Kiefner (December 3, 2002)
This is the third soundtrack of James Newton Howard this year that I have given 5 stars. The first two films this year were Signs and Treasure Planet. All three scores have the Howard sound but are completely different types of music. The Emperor's Club's main theme is a very typical melodic theme from Howard, featuring guitar, oboe, horns and strings. It has the feeling of an open spaces type Western theme. Right at the end of the main theme if you listen carefully you will hear two small cords from Signs, done earlier this year.
The majority of the CD consists of some absolutely incredible underscore tracks. Howard has the ability to take these small blocks of music and transform them into highly listenable pieces of music. The final track, Young Martin Blythe, is one of the finest tracks Howard has ever written. The Toast, is another of my favorites, peaceful and serene, going from strings, oboe, clarinet, horns, piano and strings and piano. Nice music to listen to while the sun goes down.
At 29+ minutes it is a short score. But after listening to it several times I did not feel cheated.
It is performed by The Hollywood Studio Symphony under the baton of Pete Anthony and is well recorded. Another excellent release by James Newton Howard this year.
