Reviews
Artful, controversial score by Jeffery (May 2, 2003)
Like the difficult film in which its derived from, Glass received both acclaim and criticism for his intriguing score. Centered on drifting, repetitive piano and string themes, the score has that familiar Glass "sound." Yet, the amazing thing about Glass' daring music is that it actually works. The film dives into three eras--a day in the life of three women; Glass manages to meld these women together through his haunting cadences. "Morning Passages" is a film score dream--seamlessly uniting three women with haunting piano scales. As Michael Cunningham did in his evocative novel, in "I'm Going to Make A Cake," Glass makes baking a cake sound more like an invigorating art project than a housewife's mundane domestic task.
