Nothing Out Of The Ordinary
by
Thomas Kiefner (August 26, 2003)
Being a fan of westerns I went to the theater to see Open Range, starring Kevin Costner, Robert Duvall, and Annette Bening. Filmed in scenic Alberta, Costner was also the director and one of the executive producers. Expecting more creative substance, I was disappointed to see a very ordinary hollywood scripted western. Not a bad movie, the script recalled movies seen many times before.

Michael Kamen's score fell into the same category, nothing out of the ordinary. In the beginning of the film when you see the beautiful scenery and the horses running, I was listening for a big bold theme to attack my emotions, bring me into what I was seeing. I was disappointed to hear something I could not remember leaving the theater. This was pretty much the case with the entire score. The opening track on the CD, "Holding All My Love For You", performed by Julianna Raye, is actually the end title in the film. It was nicely sung but something I've heard a 100 times before. "Wagon Wheel", my favorite track, started with a fiddle solo leading into a good rendition of the main theme. "Spooks On The Hill" and "Cat And Mouse" were well done underscore sequences. The guitar solos by Neill MacColl, especially his solo on "Wounded Button" were excellent.

Overall, this is a score for the western or Michael Kamen collector only. As I said earlier, nothing out of the ordinary.
