The first flawless Williams' score
by
Jeffery (May 2, 2003)
Whenever I see this film, I wonder how long it took before the Williams' two-note shark motif became famous. In a sense, the music recalls both the swashbuckling themes of Max Steiner's 'The Adventures of Don Juan' and 1950s horror music. Listen to the moody score of 'The Creature from the Black Lagoon' and in the underwater dance between beauty & beast, you will find hints of the shark motif. Yet, besides the familiar theme, Williams provides other great tunes--"Promenade" (strangely omitted from some soundtrack versions)--the music before the haunting death of Alex--is a cheery, sarcastic fanfare; while "Out to Sea" and "End Title" are ennobling.
