Goldsmith sounds off!!
by Michael Longstreet (December 5, 2006)
Some of Jerry Goldsmith's best work, "First Knight" delivers on all levels. "Arthur's Farewell" and "Raid on Leonesse" are probably the best tracks on the album, while "Arthur's Fanfare" is a great opener for just about any occassion. The late, great, Goldsmith really makes you feel like you're in the time of the knights of the round table. Sean Connery and Richard Gere's performances help make the movie what is, but it wouldn't be complete with Goldsmith's fantastic score!
Camelot Lives
by Godwin Borg (July 14, 2005)
10 years have already passed since this movie's release but it's score remains one of the most frequently spinning discs in my cd players. "Arthur's Fanfare" opens the disc with a theme that is recurrent in more than one of tracks to follow and from the very first note Camelot breathes and comes to life thanks to this sublime composition of Jerry Goldsmith. The main theme is bold and heroic Goldsmith at his finest with a very emotional, moving twist in the second movement, one of the themes that once they get into you they're there. 'Raid On Leoness' 'To Leonesse' and 'Night Battle' are 3 of the most intense action packed cues ever, full of Goldsmithian energy and a huge dose of Gustav Holst's 'The Planets' vibe. The score keeps on gaining momentum until it's bursts in the most bombastic cue Goldsmith wrote since The Omen Final Conflict, namely "Arthur's Farewell, a raging full orchestra backed with a massive choir, expressing a power only Jerry Goldsmith knew how to unleash! The closing theme 'Camelot Lives' concludes this score with a toned down version of the main theme on a smaller ensemble, then qickly re-rising to a full energetic finale. Alexander Courage's magnificent orchestrations make this an even richer score, enjoyable in each and every aspect. This is definitely one of Jerry's best scores from the 90's if not the best one from the last decade.
Camelot lives and so does Jerry Goldsmith, in the hearts of his family, friends of all his devoted fans. A week from now it will be a year of his passing away. Rest in peace and live forever Jerry!.
