Zimmer at his finest
by Michael Longstreet (December 5, 2006)
The score to the Oscar winning film "Gladiator" is top notch! Hans Zimmer is at his top form providing music to this Roman epic from start to finish. From "The Battle" to "Now We Are Free" we feel the sadness, action, and sense of revenge that Maximus felt throughout the course of the film. It is probably one of the most riveting scores in recent years, and one that I'm proud to have in my collection.
Now the second album, "More Music from Gladiator" is a good follow up, and has good tracks, but it's not as good as the first. The second album has lines interspersed throughout the music (just like James Horner's "Back to Titanic" did in his second album). This is a nice touch, but it does take something away from the score. It is still a good album though.

An album that gives you a good look in the kitchen of composing for a movie. It is filled not only with more music, but also with test versions of cues, that were orchestrated later, alternate music that was used (or not), pieces of the dialog, in short, a kind of "The making of..."
