A mesmerizing score
by a soundtrack collector (August 29, 2004)
Having recently seen the directors cut of another indie, Donnie Darko, it has become abundantly clear that music can make or break a film (unfortunately it is the latter with the new cut of Darko). From the haunting Elfman-esque Deviation of a Theme: Stitch, which opens up May, it is obvious that the viewer is in for an unsettling ride. Composer Jaye Barnes-Luckett (and her one-woman band, Alien Tempo Experiment 13 a.k.a. ATE 13) has created a tailor-made score for the film, with a variety of musical styles to evoke every emotion. Ranging from the punk Breeders-influenced sound of Made to Love You to the nightmarish childrens lullaby Frox (He Loves All the Children) (a contender for the creepiest song ever recorded), to the classical strings on Deviation of a Theme: Kiss, JBL displays a wide range of musical influence and abilities. One can only hope that we see more from JBL in the future!

The original music that Ms. Luckett created for the film is only available for download at her golittlerecords.com website. You have the option to purchase the full 23-track soundtrack/score, with unused tracks that were created for the film, or a 5-track Pop Pak with her four original songs and the instrumental New Years Evil. It is a worthwhile purchase for any fan of the film May.
