Music of the invaders,

I'll be honest--I'm not a big fan of John Williams. I think that about 90% of his work is over-blown, over-bearing fluff. Sorry!
But here Mr. Williams has crafted a score that is indeed a departure from his usual work. With Speilberg's War of the Worlds, he bathes the film with dark tones that fit the film quite well. One of my favorite tracks would have to be "The Intersection Scene", which introduces a brooding, powerful, enigmatic three-part (Oboe? Bassoon?) motif as the first tripod rises ominously into the sky. Unfortunately this particular motif never makes a reprisal, which is a shame since it would have made a great theme for the martians themselves. Still there are great moments in this album, especially "Reaching the Country" which begins with a plethora of hopeful female voices, only to take a turn for the dark as instrumentals ascend morbidly through the orchestra, announcing the coming of doom. There are other noteworthy tracks here such as "Ray and Rachel", one of the disc's lighter pieces, or "Epilogue", which closes the disc with a somber, uncertain air of ambiguity. The inclusion of Morgan Freeman's "Prologue" and "Epilogue" narrations are a nice touch too. This is a score worth checking out.
