Too chaotic...
by
Alex (July 2, 2006)
Heil and Klimek's score for "The Cave" in many ways is quite similar to their score for "Land of the Dead". While there are rare moments where the composers put together a piece of music that is just downright cool (the highlight of the LOTD score being "To Canada"), most of the CD is just a big mess of orchestral bombardment. This disc starts on a good note (no pun intended) with "Cold War Romania", establishing the violin theme that is to reappear in several modified forms a few times throughout the album. There are a few other pieceson the disc that impressed me as well. Track 4 ("Dig Site") uses ethnic flutes to decent effect, track 5 ("Carpathian Mountains") is an exciting reprisal of the main theme (this is also a very well-orchestrated piece), and track 6 ("Team Meeting"), which uses weird and not unpleasant ambient sounds.
The best track on the disc is 9, "Team Enters The Water". This is a great track that is easily comparable to the early work of John Carpenter (i.e. The Fog).
Now shall we get to the 'problem' tracks? Pretty much the rest of the CD unfortunately. Most of the track are loud and uninspired action cues, unmemorable and frankly boring. Heil and Klimek rely way too heavily on ear-piercing orchestral screams and other conventional gimmicks that unfortunately make this score an unremarkable one. Throughout the remaining 30 (!) or so tracks there are a few isolated pockets of good music (track 13, "Top And Jack", is a short but pleasing reprisal of the main theme, and is also one of the more somber cues on the disc).
Way too long (running close to seventy five minues!) and haphazard to be enjoyable, and composed by an orchestra that I think was made up out of thin air for the hell of it (Orchestra.Net Prague...what!?!?), this is a score that has its moment but ultamitely disappoints.
I've heard some great horror scores, but unfortunately "The Cave" isn't one of them.
