True to Stargate Mythology
by
Michael Longstreet (April 22, 2008)
Joel Goldsmith has been part of Stargate SG-1 since its inception, scoring the series’ premiere episode, “Children of the Gods,” in 1997. Now, after the show has concluded its 10-year run, he returns to provide the score for the show’s first full-length feature film: Stargate: The Ark of Truth.

Joel, son of the late multiple Oscar winning composer Jerry Goldsmith, keeps the music pure to the series, bringing 23 tracks of great music from start to finish. Recorded live with the Seattle Northwest Sinfonia, this CD underscores the conclusion of SG-1’s struggle against the Ori, as well as its ongoing battle with the Replicators. Along with the score, the CD contains a 16-page full-color booklet that includes articles by Ark of Truth director Robert C. Cooper, Executive Producer Brad Wright, and of course by the composer himself, Joel Goldsmith. Also included in the booklet is original artwork by the FreeClyde team (Goldsmith’s website), and exclusive photography from the film.

Surprisingly, Goldsmith chose to give the film’s main title a classic sound. Instead of using the staple music from the Stargate SG-1 series, he chose to use the music from the original 1994 Stargate movie. That music was done by David Arnold (Casino Royale). Incorporating that classic sound from the film helps take fans back to the original roots of Stargate, all the way back to the initial story that spawned the series in the first place.

The album as a whole is good, though standouts include “Journey to Celestis,” “The Ark of Truth,” and “The Battle Begins.”

Goldsmith, who has scored well over 70 hours of music for the Stargate franchise, will also be providing the score for second feature film, Stargate: Continuum, releasing exclusively on DVD this July. Goldsmith has also done music for shows like: Diagnosis Murder, Witchblade, and of course: Stargate: Atlantis.
