My favorite underappreciated soundtrack
by
Steve Dibb (April 26, 2003)
There are only two soundtrack scores that I can listen to when I'm feeling tense, and this is one of them (the other being the Truman Show) that can actually make me feel better.

The tracks move between its own levels of calm and chaos, and its and enjoyable ride. You really can't listen to it in the background, because just when you start to relax, it prods you with another unexpected jump.

The opening track (Outside) lays out the entire album pretty well -- You hear someone shout 'Hey!' and then it jumps into a strange tingly tune which kind of keeps you on your toes.

The second track (Inside) is a bit more calm, but still very mysterious.

Overall, the music does a surprisingly good job of fitting the mood, tone and general feel of the movie and the individual scenes. I find myself remembering the scenes of the movie as I listen to the score, something that for me, is pretty rare.

It's a great soundtrack -- but don't rush out and buy it without sampling a few tracks at first. Even if you do find it, it probably won't get much playtime, but it's ususally that one you're looking for when nothing else will quite do the job.
