My Beautiful Anna...(conda)

Edelman has constructed a eclectic score for the 1996 CGI stinker, "Anaconda", which is actually a better score than the film deserves. The main theme is somewhat bland and unmemorable, but there are individual tracks on the album that stood out. There's a love theme here that, surprise surprise, is simply gorgeous. The 4th track, "This Must Be Heaven", is FANTASTIC. This piece of music is beautiful, especially the soaring strings and pan flute. It's worthy of five stars on its own. In fact, it would easily fit into any "Best Movie Love Themes" collection. Unfortunately, this gorgeous theme is only heard in this one track, and the score never reaches this level of beauty again. That's not to say there's no fun to be had otherwise: "Travelogue" is a fun and whimsical cue, contrasting nicely with the thundering action cues elsewhere, and "My Beautiful Anna...(conda)" features a nicely relaxed piano solo performed by none other than Edelman himself. The composer inserts oddball sound effects here and there, including a whistling sound during one of the earlier action cues that sounds uncannily like a cuckoo clock (!?).
The album is worth buying, if only for the one beautiful track.
At a little less than 34 minutes, "Anaconda" is a score that comes, squeezes you, spits venom in your face and sinks its hangs into your throat, and slithers away. It's a harmless listen with some isolated moments of excellence. If only Edelman had used the love theme a little more, this could have been an exemplary score. Recommended.
