Question

The best soundtrack, again!

Hello there!
I'm working on an article about soundtracks for "La Presse" (in Québec), so I'm asking you the same old stupid, impossible question : What is to you THE (yes, only one) best soundtrack of all times? "La Presse" is a big, official and ordinary newspaper for ordinary people, so you don't have to be original.

Without a doubt, for me it's "CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST" (1979) by Riz Ortolani.

For me personally it would be The Sea Hawk by Erich-Wolfgang Korngold.

I vote for Bernard Herrmann's "North by Northwest."

It would have to be JAWS by John Williams. A stirring blend of suspenseful
and thrilling music blended deftly with a touch of 1940's Pirate movies and
swashbuckling themes that manages to enthrall me and give me a slightly
different listening experience every time I play it. Thank you, John.

Today it could be Danny Elfman's Batman.

By a country mile, STAR WARS, EPISODE V: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, an unparalleled masterpiece of astonishing craftsmanship...usually in these types of polls, I'm like the umpteenth person to list it, so I'm rather stunned to see I'm the first this time. I'd also have to give exceedingly high marks to Williams' score for CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND...

This is an impossible question to answer as the already submitted ones show, but my vote would be for the classic horror score by Fred Myrow and Malcolm Seagrave, "Phantasm."

ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST by Ennio Morricone !!!

Il Gattopardo by Nino Rota. It is the main music for Martin Scorcese's documentary on Italian cinema. It is arguably the most evocative cinema music ever written.

The best soundtrack, so far.

George S. Clinton's MORTAL KOMBAT.
Ninja techno kicks ass.

Hah! Just kidding.

It's KRULL, by James Horner.

Yes, KRULL is the best, though the movie certainly isn't. I don't imagine many people have seen that anyway. It's got music for adventure, heroism, action, horror, suspense, mystery, love, majesty, epiphany, dreamy twilights, and heart-racing exhiliration. Giant orchestral sound, thanks to Greig McRitchie (the BEST movie orchestrator, who also did Conan the Barbarian. Second best is Tim Simonec) Lots of brass. Creepy synth. Special percussion. Children's choir. Adult choir. It's got it all!

...Almost. The only things it lacks are a real villain theme, and Horner's trademark shakuhachi. For the perfect shakuhachi, listen to Horner's WILLOW. For the perfect elaboration of WILLOW's villain theme (for General Kael), see Horner's BRAINSTORM.
Also, KRULL could benefit from a touch comedy, as WILLOW's score did with the minor theme for the character of Burglekutt. If only all of these elements were combined, the resulting score would be beyond any criticism of content.* But it's still the best.

Buy Krull at supercollector.com
Buy it now. KRULL. NOW.

*In the performance, by the London Symphony Orchestra, there are a few minor flubs.

My favorite composer is Bernard Herrmann, so my answer may be partial, but his Harryhausen film scores are absolutely outstanding. I select Mysterious Island with Jason And The Argonauts a very close second.

Hello,
This is a tuff question for me, But right of the top of my head the first thing that comes to mind is "King of Kings" By Miklos Rozsa. Though if I thought about this for a long time I'm sure I would change my mind many times, It's hard for me to leave out my other two favorite composers Elmer Bernstein and John Scott.
Best Regards,
David
