Question

Am I the only one who thinks David Arnold is...?

For way too long I have been subjected to the atrocities that Mr.
David Arnold has unleashed on the Bond movies, his heavy
reliance on the tricks of the great John Barry saw Arnold bring
nothing new to the franchise, and the fact that his theme songs
were appalling hunks of rubbish did not engender him either.
Well isn't it illuminating that the moment he is gone from Bond
a pop singer (and cohort) compose a song that has shot up the
pop charts? Isn't this vindication that Arnold was unfit all these
years? The great irony is that a British Bond now has an
American composer aiding him in his odysseys. Thomas Newman
is a worthy composer and full of talent.

I was never enthusiastic about David Arnold's Bond music. It all sounded alike. I don't understand why he was chosen 5 consecutive times to score the newest Bond films. Let's hope Thomas Newman will bring something fresh to the music scene and all those elements that made Bond music so cool to listen to.

Serifiot, it is good to know that I was not alone. You articulated
things far better than I.

How do you account for the failure of Sheryl crow,Madonna and jack whites theme songs
which Arnold had nothing to do with? What's that vindication of??
It's pretty obvious that adele s record would shoot up the charts because tis adele and for
the first time since Duran Duran, the bond movies have got an artist at the peak of their
commercial success.
For my money, you know my name, surrender and only myself to blame are great bond
songs ,not appalling hunks of rubbish.but each to their own.
Have you seen reviews of Tom newmans score for Skyfall?? They're not great.

EdwardG, I stand corrected then! For I had mistakenly believed
that Arnold was responsible for the lamentable (my tastes) theme
songs. And that then alarms me more, because that I would
have expected it as the job of a Bond composer, but if you haven't
got the talent ?
I have yet to hear Skyfall soundtrack, but anythings better than
the lousy (my tastes) rumblings of Arnold's noises. And I would
not be alone in thinking that the Bond songs you mentioned are
no degree worthy of the classic theme songs from the franchise.
How could "Nobody does it better" or any other of the
acknowledged classics sit beside the ones you list? I googled em
to remind myself and I realised why I had not recalled em. But
this is subjective, as you rightly pointed out.

Yes, you are!
I think that after John Barry Arnold is the best choice for REGULAR Bond composer (I say it again - for REGULAR composer!!!).
Mr newman may be "worthy composer and full of talent" but I think this was not good idea to give music direction for ACTION & SPY movie to composer, who never did something in that kind. Yes, you can say ''if he don't start one time, how he can practice in this type of movies?''. But for me it's not simple movie - it's Bond, it's 50th Anniversary - you can read reviews - that people thinks about this score. My friend (big Bond fun) already listened Newman score. That did he say? 30 min after I have listened this score, I forgot all themes, except Bond Theme variations.
It's not good that Bond-23 can enter in history as ''best movie with worst /unmemorable/etc. score".

I hear you. I would also suggest that any of the Arnold efforts in
BOND scoring are unfit for repeated listenings and is an entirely
unmemorable orchestral outing. So if Newman's is poor, then he is
following in the footsteps of a midget.

Sure, David Arnold is responsible for the quite disappointing effort of
Thomas Newman as he is guility for providing songs he didn't even
write.
I'm stunned about what you write here...

Tfmj.
I did acknowledge my mistake. And my comment about Arnold
following in the steps of... was a jesting continuation of someone
else's argument, not my own opinion, as I have yet to hear the
Newman soundtrack myself. I will stand by my tastes in my earlier
opinions.

"I was never enthusiastic about David Arnold's Bond music. It all sounded alike." So did most of John Barry's Bond scores...not that there aren't some I like, but let's face it: If you've heard one Barry Bond, you've heard them all (with a few exceptions). In fact, to me most of Barry's scores in general ALL sound alike...with a few rare exceptions (The Black Hole, King Kong 1976, etc.).
