Question

New soundtracks releases and potential hot sellers...

Something like the previous question in one of the threads regarding the promotion of soundtracks that don't exist, which soundtracks would you want to see get their first official releases or extended re-releases and which of these soundtrack releases do you think would be hot sellers?

Answers

Dave Grusin's "The Goonies" (this title tops my wish list; one of my all-time favourite scores)

Jerry Goldsmith's "Gremlins" (the release by Geffen is in my opinion the worst soundtrack release ever)

Alan Parker's "Jaws 3-D" (Although the LP is nice, I would love to see a remastered CD release)

John Williams' "SpaceCamp" (Would be nice to see a release of this title; some really good stuff from Williams)

Jerry Fielding's "Beyond the Poseidon Adventure" (Great music, bad movie...)

...and many more...

...Lisa And the Devil/House Of Exorcism

serifiot, April 2, 2006; 9:14 PM

''Me?... Decent?!...'' Why not... ''GILDA'' as well! ;- )

serifiot, April 2, 2006; 9:25 PM

@ serifiot

I´ve heard that Lisa and the Devil will be released in the future.

You only want two of the three scores written for Blind Terror?

The Enforcer is coming mid to end of the year from Aleph.

moenter.melle, April 2, 2006; 9:41 PM

I think following titles mentioned above, have a good chance to be released:

Beyond the Poseidon Adventure - Jerry Fielding

Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? - Frank DeVol (if the tapes exist)

Harper - Johnny Mandel

The Drowning Pool - Michael Small

But not Wait Until Dark. The tapes for this are lost.

moenter.melle, April 2, 2006; 9:43 PM

Me too. I certainly hope so! It will be part of the film music series dedicated to the films of Mario Bava.

One more and that's it! ''Mommie Dearest'' (H. Mancini)... also ''Frenzy'' that's it.

There was a third one! I read somewhere the whole thing was a scandal. It was Bernstein's which was used, I think. Previn's rejected... who is the third composer?

serifiot, April 2, 2006; 10:01 PM

It was David Whitaker... Bernstein's was finally used.

Interesting trivia... http://www.rejectedfilmscores.150m.com/list.html#Rejected

serifiot, April 2, 2006; 10:22 PM

The third composer on Blind Terror was David Whitacker.

Frenzy would be a really big seller. Especially when coupled with the rejected score. But this damn thing is from Universal.

moenter.melle, April 2, 2006; 10:23 PM

...''Blind Terror'' was aka ''See No Evil'' in the U.S. release.

What's wrong with Universal?

serifiot, April 2, 2006; 10:29 PM

Universal didn´t license their old scores to other companies. Same goes for Paramount and Walt Disney. Exceptions are possible, if the composers supplied the labels with their own tapes. This is the reason why The Night Walker and Knight Rider could be released.

These right issues are very complicated. Gremlins for example, is a Warner movie, a studio which licensed their scores to other companies. But score-rights belong to Geffen, which doesn´t interested in a release of the full score or to license them to others. Same goes for The Goonies. Both scores are not possible to release.

moenter.melle, April 2, 2006; 10:35 PM

Hmm... What are the U.S. record labels waiting for? The music archives are just sitting gathering dust particles! What happened to the sharing and the preservation of fim music? No wonder bootlegging is rampent.

Universal France has recently done a wonderful job in releasing some really beautiful French rare film music in digipacks. The Italians as well with their CAM releases also paying tribute to other countries besides their own. It's really a shame the U.S. record labels don't follow suit.

serifiot, April 2, 2006; 11:06 PM

Well, it might be true there has been some bootlegs and pirate CDs of these titles around but, God, how I wish there were official and decent releases of the following:
1. Black Sunday (John Williams)
2. The Black Hole (John Barry)
3. Damnation Alley (Jerry Goldsmith)
4. The Right Stuff (The original recordings by Bill Conti)

And, in terms of expanded editions:
1. Indiana Jones and the Temple Doom (John Williams)
2. Star Trek V-The Final Fontier, Star Trek: First Contact, Star
Trek: Insurrection, Star Trek: Nemesis (all Jerry Goldsmith)
3. Executive Decision (Jerry Goldsmith)
4. Star Trek: Generations (Dennis McCarthy)

Same procedure as every year... ;-)

Just one:

MR. MAJESTYK by Charles Bernstein

Not a single cue from this score ever got released, neither legitimate nor hmpf.

handstand, April 3, 2006; 1:14 PM

Damnation Alley was fully released on the Jerry Goldsmith at 20th Century Fox boxed set.

ragar01, April 4, 2006; 1:11 AM

It wasn´t complete, since the Moog overdubs are missing. In the box set are mainly pure orchestral parts of the score.

moenter.melle, April 4, 2006; 8:10 PM

My tipps:

Highlander - the complete score by Michael Kamen
Independence Day complete score
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom expanded/complete
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade expanded/complete
Young Sherlock Holmes by Bruce Broughton complete
Lethal Weapon 1,2,3,4 - scores by Michael Kamen
The Matrix /Reloaded/Revolution - all scores by Don Davis
The Mummy Returns complete score - since the best part - the final battle is missing on the official release as well as some great cuesGodzilla by David Arnold
Troy by Gabriel Yared
Batman and Robin by Elliot Goldenthal - and excellent score!

karol, April 7, 2006; 10:47 PM

karol:
Intrada released the complete Young Sherlock Holmes a while back, admittedly as a limited edition/promo. Copies of that show up on Ebay from time to time.

ragar01, April 8, 2006; 3:15 AM

ragar01:
thx for the info. I know of that release by Intrada. I looked for the score on ebay as well, but unfortunately failed to win any auction. maybe next time.
However, an official release would cost something like 29.95, that would be a reasonable price I guess, less than on ebay.

You can help to get the Goonies full edition score by reaching some labels, especially Varese Sarabande :

What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? by Frank DeVol...perhaps a similar treatment like that of Hush, Hush...Sweet Charlotte by Frank DeVol on Intrada. An expanded complete soundtrack of Born Free by John Barry...not a re-recording. Also, a complete recording of the soundtrack score from Devil & Daniel Webster(aka All that Money Can Buy) by Bernard Herrmann.
A complete Ghost and Mrs. Muir also by Herrmann...OST, not a re-recording...
