Question

Which is for you the most sad track you know ?

... by answering, you may tell if YES or NO you saw the film. My answer would be :
1. Morricone - Il Prato - main title (no, but I'm really looking forwards !!!!!!!)
2. I do not tell, I can make up my mind ! Well, it doesn't matter. And now, what about you, folks ?

Answers

Morricone's "Silenzi Dopo Silenzi" from LA PIOVRA (5?)
Neil Young's "Philadelphia" (song) from PHILADELPHIA

I saw both on screen, but cannot remember the corresponding scenes the music was played to (well, the second was probably over the end credits, but I could be wrong).

(in the non-soundtrack category: Barber's "Adagio for Strings")

The Main Theme from Chaplin by John Barry. Tragic life of a genius and it was around the same time my grandfather died.

Remembrances from Schindler's List by John Williams
Miracle from Man On The Moon by R.E.M.
Let's Hit the Wall (End title) from Kafka by Cliff Martinez
Cole's first Dream from 12 Monkeys by Paul Buckmaster

that's what came to my mind right now, I saw all of these films

Randy Newman's "Toy Story 2" song "When She Loved Me". Heartbreaking lyrics and a superb
melody. One of Newman's single best song pieces.

Some of the tracks already listed already are very good. Also good: the timing of the question! I'm going to spill a whole bunch here, since I was already beginning to piece together a boohoo album for myself, and so I've considered a lot lately which tracks to include. If I have to narrow it down to one, saddest of all, right now I'm thinking "Burial", from AMERIKA, by Basil Poledouris, the film of which I have not seen.

Others I'm trying to arrange in, no particular order as yet:

"Laurel & Owen" - THE FINAL COUNTDOWN (John Scott) - Haven't seen this.
"Athos's Story"/"Milady's Theme" - THE FOUR MUSKETEERS (Lalo Schifrin)
"The Face Of Pan" (aka "You Are The Pan") - HOOK (John Williams)
track 2 of suite 1 of AGNES OF GOD - Georges Delerue (Does this sound like anything?)
"Marooned" - CRUSOE (Michael Kamen)
"Creature's Story" - BEASTMASTER 2 (Robert Folk)
"Daniel & Kumiko" (half a track) KARATE KID PART II (Bill Conti)
The third part of the second Red Sonja suite.
"Memories" - TOP GUN (Harold Faltermeyer)
Qui Gon's Noble End - THE PHANTOM MENACE - someone
"The Garden" - OTHELLO (Charlie Mole) - haven't seen
"Erinnerung" - DAS BOOT (Klaus Doldinger)
"Orphans of Doom", "Funeral Pyre" - CONAN THE BARBARIAN - Basil Poledouris.
the B theme from ROBOCOP. Can't remember which track.
"For Love One Can Die" - Ennio Morricone. Even though the specific recording of it borders on cheesy-- a frequent complaint I have of Morricone's sad themes... though this theme itself is just fine. Haven't seen this movie.
main title - THE DEAD ZONE - Michael Kamen
Theme from UNCHAINED - Alex North. Haven't seen.
"Ruined Landscape" - THE NEVER-ENDING STORY (Giorgio Moroder)
"Theme Of Sadness" - THE NEVER-ENDING STORY (Klaus Doldinger)
"Bastian's Lost Memories" - NEVERENDING STORY II - Robert Folk
Reunion - JANE EYRE - John Williams. Haven't seen.
Love theme from EL CID - Miklos Rozsa. Haven't seen.
A few sad tracks by Wojciech Kilar:
"Twilight Cellos" - PORTRAIT OF A LADY. Haven't seen.
"Vocalise" - THE NINTH GATE
"Corso & The Girl" (just the first half, and the piano version which didn't make it to the album) - THE NINTH GATE
"Le Bergere et le Ramoneur"/"Generique" - LE ROI ET L'OISEAU. Haven't seen.
end credits of BLACK BEAUTY - Danny Elfman
"Casper's Lullabye" - CASPER (James Horner) Haven't seen.
"I'm A Friend Of Simon's" - MERCURY RISING (John Barry)
"Two Socks/Wolf Theme" - DANCES WITH WOLVES (Chuck Berry?)
"Return To The Present" - SOMEWHERE IN TIME (Frankenberry? Barry Manilow?)
"It's A Hill"/"The Rain" - THE ENGLISHMAN WHO WENT UP A HILL BUT CAME DOWN A MOUNTAIN (Stephen Endelman)
"Morag's Lament" (traditional) - ROB ROY
"D's Memories" - MEN IN BLACK (Danny Elfman)
"Rachel's Song" - BLADERUNNER (Vangelis) Haven't seen.

BLACK ROBE - Georges Delerue. There are a lot of sad tracks on this one, so it's hard to settle on one or two. "Libera Me" is probably the one that would grab most people, though "The Escape" is right up there (even though half of it is merely *suggestive* of an earlier-established sad theme).

And three non-score tracks (plenty film-ish, though):
"Irish Peace" from ARABESQUE (Mike Batt)
movement II of Kamen's guitar concerto.
12 O'Clock - HEAVEN AND HELL (Vangelis)

Notable mention: Gollum's song, which would be 6.5 times better if it were NOT a song. Oh well.

Well zuvqwyx3, you're not a good guy ! I was thinking : "Folks will give their answers with one or two tracks and I can buy a few ones." But now, I have to buy 50 !

Come to think of it... a melancholic melody from a film yet beautifully simple and beautifully melodic is the ethereal theme music from the excellent film *SERPICO* composed by Mikis Theodorakis. Listen to it! View the film! A must soundtrack for any intelligent film music collection.

When I want " sad " (which is all the time), I turn to my favorite:
Georges DELERUE.

Some favs:
- " Mother will always be here " from OUR MOTHER'S HOUSE
- " Nobody Runs Forever " ORIGINAL main title
- " Pat Tells Joe " from JOE VS THE VOLCANO
- " La fin de la Royyaute " from LA REVOLUTION FRANCAISE
- " Lili " from LA REINE BLANCHE
- " The Drive to Aunt Fern's "/ " Easter Picnic "/ " Departure "
from STEEL MAGNOLIAS
- " Stellaire 1 " from TOURS DU MONDE, TOURS DU CIEL
- the love theme as actually heard (but not recorded) in THE HOUSE ON CARROLL STREET
- " Troubled Des "/ " Forget it " from TRUE CONFESSIONS
- " Piano Concerto " from A LITTLE SEX
- the entire, soon-to-be released, ORIGINAL, DOROTHY & BEN

Two of the saddest songs I've ever heard are in the movie 8 Seconds...

1.) Lane's Theme - Bill Conti
2.) If I Had Only Known - Reba McEntire

The first, a hauntingly beautiful piano piece. So amazing in its sheer simplicity.

Reba's song plays at the end of the movie as pictures of the real Lane Frost and his friends and family flash across the screen. I cry every...single...time.

"Last Exit To Brooklyn" - main title (Mark Knopfler)
"Theme from The Day Of The Dolphin" (Georges Delerue)

HEARTBREAKSOUNDTRACK, June 29, 2006; 12:21 AM

Awakenings from Awakenings by Randy Newman
The Moon Beckons from Man in the Iron Mask by Nick Glennie-Smith

There are a couple. I agree that Morricone has some good ones - I especially like Gabriel's oboe from the Mission.

For me it has to Georges Delerue's 'Interlude' any of the tracks composed by him for the film - basically it is a single theme with a number of variations and includes a vocal track by Timi Yuro which will tear your heart to shreds. I saw this film in 1968 and the music haunts me to this day.
