Question

*THE FIRST VARESE CD CLUB RELEASES*

Hello folks!...

Don't ask why - it could be the full moon - but I got this sudden urge to write all this down and put them in order so I can finally begin digging and unearthing these very first Varese cd club releases.

Brand new and sealed is this dreamer's wishful preference but a highly unkikely and unfruitful quest, so back here on planet Earth I'll settle for used but mint/like new.

A few questions come to mind first though...

1) Was Varese the first record label to have a soundtrack cd club?

2) Since the internet was nonexistent when Varese first began their cd club and I'm assuming these releases of course were not sold in record stores, how did film music devotees and collectors abound learn about these limited releases?

I would assume soundtrack magazines (they did exist in the 80's/early 90's, did they not?) were the only source of valuable information then.

Hmmm... if memory serves me right, I believe some kind of order form was included inside some of the regular Varese soundtracks from the late 80's/early 90's sold in record stores, wasn't there?

3) Just curious... Does anyone know why Varese stopped producing limited quantity cd club soundtracks for nearly 10 years? What happened?

4) Most important question!... What is the COMPLETE list of titles?!

This is the info I have found and gathered so far... I am missing releases #11 & #12.

I believe no more than 14 Varese limited cd club soundtracks were released before they stopped producing them in the early 90's.

As a side note, what do the label numbers mean? Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I'm assuming the first two digits must be the year the particular soundtrack was released and the third digit the month (it's probably incorrect since it does not agree with the information listed here in S.C.) and finally the fourth digit simply the order of each cd.

I'm completely lost with the label numbering of "Jagged Edge" and "Flesh+Blood" though.

Also, what year were "Jagged Edge" & "Flesh+Blood" released?

Here it goes...

1989 #1 "CHERRY 2000" Basil Poledouris VCL 8903.1 (1.500 copies)

1989 #2 "FEDORA / CRISIS" Miklos Rozsa VCL 8903.2 (1.200 copies)

1989 #3 "PINO DONAGGIO: SYMPHONIC SUITES" Pino Donaggio VCL 8903.3 (1000 copies)

1990 #4 "VIBES" James Horner VCL9001.4 (1000 copies)

1990 #5 "THE ROSE TATTOO" Alex North VCL 9001.5 (1.000 copies)

1990 #6 "BLOODLINE / RED SONJA" Ennio Morricone VCL 9001.6 (1000 copies)

1991 #7 "RAGGEDY MAN" Jerry Goldsmith VCL 9101.7 (1500 copies)

1991 #8 "STARS 'N' BARS" Elmer Bernstein VCL 9101.8 (1000 copies)

1991 #9 "LAST EMBRACE / EYE OF THE NEEDLE" Miklos Rozsa VCL 9101.9 (1200 copies)

1992 #10 "THE BURBS" Jerry Goldsmith VCL 9201.10 (2500 copies)

#11 ???

#12 ???

year? #13 "JAGGED EDGE" John Barry BCL 6001 (1000 copies)

year? #14 "FLESH+BLOOD" Basil Poledouris BCL 6002 (1500 copies)

Any mistakes?

Thanks in advance for any input! Cheers!! ;- )

P.S.

Some of the information listed here in Soundtrack Collector for these soundtracks is incorrect!

"Cherry 2000"... released in 1989 not 1987, the movie was released in 1987 not the soundtrack

"Raggedy Man"... released in 1991 not 1981, the movie was released in 1981 not the soundrtrack

"Jagged Edge"... can't be 1985 since it's #13, I don't know the year of its soundtrack release, 1985 is when the movie was released

"Flesh+Blood"... can't be 1985 since it's #14, I don't know the year of its soundtrack release, 1985 is when the movie was released

"Fedora/Crisis" correct label # is VCL 8903.2, can't be VCL 8902.2 since there was never a 8902 number and since "Cherry 2000" with label # VCL 8903.1 was the first ever Varese cd club release.

"Stars 'N' Bars" correct label # is VCL 9101.8 not VCL 9101

As far as I know Varese was the first label which had a soundtrack CD club, but Japanese SLC also released CD Club soundtracks - SpaceCamp was one of them. Anyone knows about other SLC Club releases?

ohmss, August 10, 2006; 10:14 AM

Referring to what hammon already said, here is the note I found in the booklet of my recently acquired - seemingly "brandnew and sealed" ;-) - Varèse CD DRESSED TO KILL (VCD 47148):

"NOT IN ANY STORES: LIMITED EDITION CD's
Varèse Sarabande is proposing to launch a mail order-only CD club
devoted to issuing limited edition compact discs of great film scores.
These CD's would be available to club members only.
If you would be interested in receiving information concerning the
VARÈSE SARABANDE CD CLUB please write to us at:
Varèse Sarabande Records 13006 Saticoy Street,
North Hollywood, CA 91605"

And by the way, I guess the film release year instead of the actual CD release year could be found on many soundtrack CDs. DRESSED TO KILL only bears the year 1980, too.

Regards,

Urs

Actually, the original Varese Club CDs were not availble from any store. You could only order them directly from Varese Sarabande via an "order form" which they would mail out when the titles were available. The numbering system did reflect the month and date of their releases. I can remember my order form that had BOYS FROM BRAZIL marked as sold out on the first flyer I received. Seemed odd, and have always wondered how it could have sold out before ever being advertised.

As for the SLC "Club" titles. I can remember walking into Intrada and seeing SPACECAMP and buying it, wondering what other "club titles" there were. They were never "exclusive". Here is what I have:

BATTLE OF THE BULDGE - SLC 1014
BULLIT - SLC 1015
SPACECAMP - SLC 1016

If you do a search: "Soundtrack Listeners Club SLCS" 73 titles will appear (SPACECAMP not being one of them) and most of those 73 titles have been released by other companies. As for the three I have listed those (at the time of their release) had never been released on CD by any company.

Goodmorning & thanks to all for your input!...

hammon a BIG thanks!!...
More then I had in mind and indeed an extremely useful wealth of information at a glance to have in front of you when the need rises.
Don't delete them by mistake or for any reason, please.
This list is a good reference point to go back and forth to.

The expansion of my knowledge, search and acquisition concerning film music soundtracks really came upon when I first got myself a PC which is really not that along ago.
Before this, it was impossible to have the contacts I have now and which I still believe I'm in my infancy and still learning about.
Record stores were my only source of getting a soundtrack on my hands.

I remember sending Varese a letter more than once, requesting to be placed in their mailing list or something like that, concerning their limited releases being advertised in their regular cd's but unfortunately I had the letter send back to me since the address was invalid.
I guess they must had moved to a new address by the time I found out about such releases .
If I only had known about their mail ordering earlier.
I guess it's not too late thanks to the internet only much more expensive.

If I remember correctly, the first notification I got about the start of the Varese Club was
from a card in their "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" CD. I mailed it in and got the order form
back. That was around 1985, though it seems pretty early, considering the first club
releases were in '89.

glenngarv, August 11, 2006; 5:47 AM

The Varese Club was first advertised only inside the CD booklets of MANY of their soundtrack releases. Those ads pre-dated the first releases by almost two years and the first four batchs were notified by snail mail only. CDs were all hand numbered and sold in order of who mailed their invoice back the fastest.

One of the fastest sell outs was RAGGEDY MAN. During that batch, Varese lost my order form and I received it four weeks late. When I finally received my copy, six weeks after the initial announcement letter/invoice, it was #712 of 1500.

Also, all initial Club releases were limited runs of usually 1500 copies, not the generous 3000 FSM standard that Varese adapted when the club was revived.

I've also seen two additional CD's with the Varese Sarabande Club seal...Elfman's "Scrooged"
and "Freeway". Both have a catalog number of VCL 3737.2C. Perhaps these are bootlegs.
