Question

Varase & Colosseum 'massive price difference'??

Fellow soundtrack fans today I ordered 4 soundtracks from Varase in the good ol' US including 'The vanishing' and the x4 Karate Kid CD's to be released very shortly. No big deal so far.

However on the Varase site it encourages 'Europeans' to click onto a link diverting them to the Colesseum site. Being British naturally I did so but prior to clicking the 'confirm your order' button thought I'd compare the prices on both sites. I am glad I did as the difference in cost was/is huge.

My 4 CD's from VS COST 102.92 (DOLLARS) compared to the Colosseums massive increase to 159.80 (EUROS)!! Just to save you the time of grabbing your calculators at todays exchange rate this 159.80EUROS equates to ..................wait for it ....... $210.69. Thats more than a 50% increase on the VS price!! ($107.77 or £55.82 to be exact)

The prices didn't include P&P or shipping which was $22.50 from Varase to my doorstep. I don't know the P&P and shipping from colosseum but even If it was free (which obviously it isn't) I'd still be better off buying from VS.

Unbelievable..................anyone else ever come across this or have any similar info to save us getting ripped off??

colosseum records has got the highest prices on earth!!! Avoid it!

What an incredibly irrelevant statement, tyuan.

In fact, Colosseum, as Varèse's german distribution leg, doesn't get the stuff for free. They have
to calculate the shipment costs as well as the import fees, like every retailer. And these are
remarkably high.

Yeah coma you´re right. When i once ordered at Varese USA i had to pay the import fees (12 $). They are high if you have to pay them.
The customer services are better than Varese USA and they always add a promo-CD. All in all it is sometimes favorable to order at colosseum

Hi Roy,

please do your math before you post such .....

It's always interesting to see that people are fast
to blame and bitch but not fast enough to ask why
such mark-ups occur.

hmmm interesting replies.

I am aware that colosseum have to pay I'm sure a variety of taxes to import CD's from the US to Germany and that they have to recupperate the costs somewhere which in my mind is obviously from the consumer. I understand this and to an extent can see why their prices are higher.

My opening post wasn't created to 'have a go' at colosseum which I have used a few times now with no complaints. From Kleinlugwigs response it would appear that he/she thinks this?? Not so I am merely asking If others were aware and I thought it an interesting topic of note. I suppose the word 'overpriced' would've been more accurate than 'ripped off' though however 50% is a big difference in my book/wallet.

Also the math does add up Kleinlugwigs research it yourself If you like ........ sind sie deutscher vielleicht?

Incidentally I too have fallen foul of the import tax like Peter Anslam. To get round this I order small batches of CD's and pay slightly higher P&P shipping costs. These small orders get through the 'import' tax net ....... a little more on the shipping saves alot of tax. Works for me anyway.

"Unbelievable..................anyone else ever come across this or have any similar info to save us getting ripped off??"

In my book, this is an uninformed attack.

In, I think, 90 % of all releases worldwide it is surely cheaper now for a single private individiual to buy their stuff themselves directly from the respective source !!
If you do so - that's fine, but please check the facts and the math also from a business point of view before posting.

For example, that Varese obviously does not grant any discount to ANYBODY or why do you think both Intrada and SAE charge ca. $ 10.- more for KarateKid ??

It matters not to me the business point of view of V.S, Colosseum or any other company to be honest. I'm more concerned about the point of view in regards my wallet. VS and Colosseum are both businesses and as such have more money than me in their bank accounts for sure.. If this was a 'trainers collector site' and we were discussing 'foowear' issues would you honestly tell me that you would buy more expensive trainers from say JJB sports than JD sports to help them out with their import expenses?

I can see these companies point of view but without sounding harsh as a private collector they are not my problem.

At the end of the day we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one mate...and the math still adds up.

@ Coma,
I'm aware of the fact the Varèse discs have to get across the ocean one way or another, that's why I stated that Colosseum isn't ripping us off by having to sell for a higher price.

What I USED to think was that maybe Colosseum could buy them cheap, so they can sell at a price in the same range as Varèse does.

Oh, the irony...

Just today I received a new/sealed copy of THE KINDRED that I won on eBay for only $9.99 from a seller based in the USA (I also live in the USA). On the outside of the CD's shrinkwrap, there was a Colosseum Schallplatten import sticker! :-P
