James Horner's Apocalypto
19-Dec-2006 - Hollywood Records has released the score for Apocalypto. As the Maya kingdom faces its decline, the rulers insist the key to prosperity is to build more temples and offer human sacrifices. Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood), a young man chosen for sacrifice, flees the kingdom to avoid his fate. For Apocalypto, James Horner has written music for a small ensemble of musicians. It's a rhythmic mix of tribal percussion, ethnic flutes, pipes and woodwinds, synth strings and brass. The songs are performed by the famous Qawwali singer Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Terry Edwards. It's an unconventional score, but there are moments that are distinctly that of Horner's style. There are a few themes, mainly heard on the ethnic flutes, representing the love that Jaguar Paw has for his wife and son, as well as the jungle itself.
