Ghent Film Festival: the film music program
6-Aug-2008 -

You won’t believe your ears!

With its focus on film music, the Ghent Film Festival (October 7-18) has carved out its own unique niche on the international circuit. True to form, the 35th edition has five film music concerts on the menu with music from John Williams, Gabriel Yared, Clint Mansell, Angelo Badalamenti, Dario Marianelli and many others. More than ever, the Ghent Film Festival makes your ears swing!

On October 12 the Brussels Philharmonic (Flemish Radio Orchestra), conducted by Dirk Brossé, will be performing tunes by five-time Oscar winner John Williams. In a career that spans six decades, Williams has composed many of the most famous film scores in history, including Jaws, ET, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Superman, Jurassic Park and Schindler’s List.
The Brussels Philharmonic will be accompanied by three choirs: the Flemish Radio Choir, the Musa Horti and the Flemish Opera children’s choir. The John Williams concert is made possible by grants from the Port of Ghent, Belgacom and the province of East Flanders, proudly supporting the musical community.

On October 15 acclaimed composer Gabriel Yared will be honouring director Anthony Minghella, who sadly passed away earlier this year. Yared had been Minghella’s trusted composer for years, penning the scores for The English Patient, Cold Mountain and The Talented Mr Ripley. This concert is supported by the University College Ghent and will be held on 15 October at the Ghent Conservatory of Music.

On October 16 Clint Mansell and Sonus Quartet will be performing atmospheric tunes from Darren Aronofsky films (Pi, Requiem For A Dream, The Fountain). Like Aronofsky in the film world, Mansell has garnered an immense cult following for his soundtrack work, known for its dark, hypnotic beauty. The concert will be held on 16 October in the theatre hall at the arts centre Vooruit.

On October 17, the Ghent Film Festival will be presenting “That’s All Folk!”, a film music concert by folk rock sensation Kadril at the De Bijloke music centre in Ghent. The programme will include tracks from Brokeback Mountain, Black Cat White Cat, Walk the Line and Dead Man Walking. Get ready for some arm-swinging, hip-swaying folksy fun, against a backdrop of big screen film clips. This concert has been made possible thanks to the support of the Ghent University.

The closing event for the 35th edition of the Ghent Film Festival on October 18 is the 8th edition of the World Soundtrack Awards with special guests Angelo Badalamenti and Dario Marianelli. Badalamenti is primarily known for his longstanding collaboration with cult filmmaker David Lynch, while Marianelli just took home the Best Score Oscar for Atonement.
The Brussels Philharmonic, conducted by Dirk Brossé, will be performing music by both composers as part of the closing ceremony. Also music by World Soundtrack Award discoveries Daniel Tarrab and Andres Goldstein will be performed. Both the ceremony and the concert will be held at the De Bijloke music centre in Ghent. This event has been made possible thanks to the support of Port of Ghent, Sabam and Belgacom. Belgian broadcaster Canvas+ will cover this concert completely.

Tickets for these concerts are now available at FNAC.
