Secrets of a Film/TV Music Agent
17-Oct-2005 -
The Film Music Institute Presents:
FINDING FILM & TV MUSIC WORK: SECRETS AND ADVICE FROM A FILM MUSIC AGENT
Plus Demo Critiques of YOUR Music and Demo Package.

Join veteran film music agent JEFF KAUFMAN as he describes what composers and songwriters can do to get their music into film and television today, without an agent. Jeff has worked as a film and television music agent in Los Angeles since 1986.

This exclusive course describes, in detail, how composers and songwriters can use the same techniques longtime agents use to open doors, get music listened to, and get paying work in film and television music.

In a special session in the afternoon, Jeff will listen to demos and critique demo CDs and demo packages (bio/resume/credits, etc) for students to provide real-world, real-time feedback of how their music and demos may be perceived by filmmakers, agents, and others in the industry.

The course will cover areas including:
* IDENTIFYING PROSPECTS - techniques by which films, television shows, multimedia projects and others can be identified and decision makers determined. Who to call, who not to call, how to make introductory calls, how to be persistent without being a pest, and much more.

* APPROACHING DECISION MAKERS - how to get decision makers interested in composers and their music, different methods for approaching decisions makers, and how to start and build relationships.

* UTILIZING RELATIONSHIPS - how to begin and build successful relationships with decision makers, how to leverage existing relationships.

* THE SUBMISSION PROCESS - what to send, what NOT to send when submitting a composer and his/her music on a project, with a special emphasis on submission materials including demo CDs, bio and credit sheets, and more.

* THE NEGOTIATION PROCESS - how the negotiation process works between a filmmaker or production company, an agent, and the composer, including discussion of specific deal points and more.

* DEALING WITH CHALLENGES - how to successfully deal with challenges and unexpected situations during the submission, negotiation and contracting process, including finalist competitions (aka "bake-offs") and more.

* THE FINANCIAL ASPECTS - financial deal points including typical rates for composers at different levels of the business and rates for network, cable, and indie productions.

* CLOSING THE DEAL - how to end the negotiation and close the deal successfully.
