Tyler Bates' The Darkest Hour

<![CDATA[ Lakeshore Records has released The Darkest Hour, the story of five young people who find themselves stranded in Moscow, fighting to survive in the wake of a devastating alien attack. The 3D thriller highlights the classic beauty of Moscow alongside mind-blowing special effects. “This music reflects the headspace of our survivors as they navigate their way through an alien-infested Moscow,” said Tyler Bates. "The score is largely electronic – comprised of a palette of modular synthesizer experiments and propulsive rhythms featuring a vintage Synare at its core. Its atonal voice is an extension of the eerie electrical sound design that often makes one’s hair stand on end.” Sonic architect Bates designed a score utilizing nontraditional instrumentation. He described “The decision to make this journey without the aid of choir and brass melodies required me to delve deep into the complexity of the non-orchestral aspect of the music in effort to convey the essence of Moscow’s desolate streets through sound and music. The vast expanse of a micro-waved Moscow, void of human life, allowed for emotional themes to be stated entirely with solo instruments.”

The score is available from Amazon.com, Amazon UK, Amazon France and Amazon Germany.

Michael Kamen's Back To Gaya

<![CDATA[ MovieScore Media is proud to announce that they have released the legendary Michael Kamen's original orchestral score from the German fantasy animation Back To Gaya on CD and online. The completion of the score was an extraordinary achievement as the composer tragically, in the midst of composing the music for the film, passed away. Committed to fulfil the vision of Kamen, complementing the music he had written specifically for Back To Gaya with a selection of his unused compositions from previous film projects, a team of composer and orchestrators headed by Kamens long-time associates Steve McLaughlin (producer/recording engineer) and Christopher Brooks (producer/music editor) finalized the score to fit the film perfectly. MovieScore Media's album features 62 minutes of grand orchestral, adventurous and highly entertaining Michael Kamen music performed by the London Metropolitan Orchestra. In honour of the late maestro.

Gabriel Yared's In The Land Of Blood And Honey

<![CDATA[ Varèse Sarabande has released the score for In The Land Of Blood And Honey. Set against the backdrop of the Bosnian War that tore the Balkan region apart in the 1990s, the movie tells the story of Danijel (Goran Kostic´) and Ajla (Zana Marjanovic´), two people from different sides of a brutal ethnic conflict. Danijel, a soldier fighting for the Serbs, and Ajla, a Bosnian held captive in the camp he oversees, knew each other before the war, and could have found love with each other. But as the armed conflict takes hold of their lives, their relationship grows darker, their motives and connection to one another ambiguous, their allegiances uncertain. In The Land Of Blood And Honey portrays the incredible emotional, moral and physical toll that the war exerts both on individuals and people as a whole, and the terrible consequences that stem from the lack of political will to intervene in a society stricken with conflict. In addition to three cues of score by Academy Award-winning composer Gabriel Yared (The English Patient), the album also features “Miss Sarajevo” by U2 side project Passengers featuring Luciano Pavarotti, Yared’s powerful song “When My Heart Dies” as performed by Natasa Mirkovic - De Ro, and a selection of Balkan songs from the film’s soundtrack.

The score is available from Amazon.com, Amazon UK, Amazon France and Amazon Germany. ]]>

David Newman's Animals United

<![CDATA[ Perseverance Records has released the score for Animals United (Konferenz der Tiere), their second album with David Newman. This animated feature follows in the footsteps of classics such as his "Anastasia" and "Ice Age". It's the story of a group of animals waiting for the annual flood they rely on for food and water. Than they discover that the humans, who have been destroying their habitats have built a dam for a leisure resort. In style similar to Newman's "The Air Up There", this score features sweeping melodies, battling drums and an African choir. The album contains the complete orchestral score and is different from the previous European release inasmuch as it doesn't have the songs by Naturally 7 and Xavier Nadoo. Produced by David Newman and Robin Esterhammer.

Georges Delerue's Les Premiers 45 Tours De Georges Delerue

<![CDATA[ Disques Cinémusique has released Les Premiers 45 Tours De Georges Delerue, once again some of early Georges Delerue's recordings that were still unavailable on digital support. The specialized labels based in France have overlooked the early extended 45 rpm records in their various compilations devoted to the composer, keeping only one track from Les Jeux De L’amour and two from Le Farceur and Une Aussi Longue Absence. In addition, the program includes Le Bel âge, Une Fille Pour L'été (A Girl For The Summer) and Marche Ou Crève (March Or Die). These EPS - extended plays - offered the core of the music heard in the feature film : about ten minutes usually spread over four tracks. Their content in entirety deserved to be preserved. Classical Cl oriented compositions that bear the distinctive Delerue stamp alternate here with popular dances, cool jazz and blues pieces, fields in which the maestro from Roubaix excelled but was not specializing in, unlike many of his colleagues: Alain Goraguer, Serge Gainsbourg, Michel Legrand, Georges Garvarentz, Martial Solal and Michel Magne, to name only a few.

Brian Byrne's Albert Nobbs

<![CDATA[ From Varèse Sarabande comes the score for Albert Nobbs. A witty Irish-set period drama about the lives of staff at Dublin’s most luxurious hotel: the illegitimate child of a maid, a beautiful couple’s impossible love, and Albert … a woman who pretends to be a man to survive. 19th Century Ireland: for a woman to be independent and single, she must deceive everyone – by pretending to be a man. Albert, a shy butler who keeps himself to himself, has been hiding deep secret for years — ‘he’ is a woman who has had to dress and behave as a man all her life in order to escape a life of poverty and loneliness. When a handsome painter Hubert Page arrives at the hotel, Albert is inspired to try and escape the false life she has created for herself. Irish composer Brian Byrne delivers a stunning score, sure to make a powerful introduction for this composer on the international film music scene. It’s beautiful and truly inspired. The soundtrack album also features “Lay Your Head Down” — the film’s original end title song — co-written with Glenn Close herself and sung by Sinéad O’Connor.

<![CDATA[ Sony Masterworks has released the original motion picture soundtrack of Shame, an award-winning psychological drama from writer and director Steve McQueen (Hunger). At the 2011 Venice Film Festival, Shame received the Critics Choice award as well as the Best Actor accolade for Michael Fassbender. This movie – described as “a cinematic jolt” with “a brilliant, ferocious performance” by The Hollywood Reporter – is the story of Brandon (Michael Fassbender), a handsome and successful New Yorker who spends his days and nights navigating the reckless terrain of sexual obsession, on an inevitable path towards self destruction. For the original music, McQueen turned to Harry Escott, a young London-based composer best known for the original scores for Hard Candy, A Mighty Heart, Deep Water, and Shifty. Escott’s compositions focus on the potential for music to function as a storyteller with the ability to convey meaning and emotion. However, this soundtrack includes much more, adding in powerful tracks from a variety of genres: from classical to rock and blues.

<![CDATA[ Sony Music has released the soundtrack of My Week with Marilyn, a film about a week in the life of the legendary Marilyn Monroe. The movie is based on the books by Colin Clark, who as an assistant on the set of The Prince and the Showgirl in the summer of 1956 gave Monroe (Michelle Williams) an introduction to British life. Monroe was actually on her honeymoon with playwriter Arthur Miller (Daugry Scott), but when Miller had to leave the country, Clark was her companion on a week-long escape from the pressures of life as a Hollywood luminary. The themes of shooting a high-profile film, the complicated emotional life of Marilyn Monroe and 1950s Britain provide irresistible material for a diverse and entertaining soundtrack. The score was written by Conrad Pope, one of the USA’s leading arrangers, conductors and composers of film music. His recent credits include work on a.o. three of the Star Wars films, the Harry Potter series, and Pirates of the Caribbean. “Marilyn’s Theme” was contributed by Alexandre Desplat, winner of a Golden Globe (The Painted Veil, 2006) and a British Academy Film Award (The King’s Speech, 2011).

Christopher Young's The Rum Diary

<![CDATA[ Johnny Depp’s company Infinitum Nihil has released The Rum Diary through Lakeshore Records. The soundtrack features original music by Christopher Young (Spiderman 3, Drag Me To Hell) with some songs, and a duet performed by Johnny Depp with JJ Holiday. Based on the debut novel by Hunter S. Thompson, The Rum Diary tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp). Tiring of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local newspaper, The San Juan Star, run by downtrodden editor Lotterman (Richard Jenkins). Adopting the rum-soaked life of the island, Paul soon becomes obsessed with Chenault (Amber Heard), the wildly attractive Connecticut-born fiancée of Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart). Christopher Young, a former jazz drummer, was influenced by the large jazz bands of the 50s and 60s. "Most of the tracks on the CD were presented as thematic possibilities for the film," said Young. "This gave me a chance to pour out music that has been inside of me all these years."

Howard Shore's Hugo

<![CDATA[ Howe Records has released the score for Hugo. The movie tells the story of Hugo Cabret, a boy who lives behind the walls of a Parisian train station. Howard Shore’s music is composed for two ensembles – one nested within the other – to create a sense of layering in the musical palette. Inside a full symphony orchestra resides a smaller ensemble, a sort of nimble French dance band that includes the ondes Martenot, musette, cimbalom, tack piano, gypsy guitar, upright bass, a 1930s trap-kit, and alto saxophone. “I wanted to match the depth of the sound to the depth of the image,” says Shore. The Hugo score is based around a family of primary musical themes. “The themes are used for clarity of storytelling and they develop over the course of the film,” says the composer. The score’s central theme is a Parisian waltz that develops into the song “Coeur Volant.” Howard Shore invited renowned French singer Zaz to collaborate with Elizabeth Cotnoir and him on the song, which captures the lyrical essence of the world of Hugo.

<![CDATA[ Quartet Records has released in their Solisterrae Music series the score for Verbo. Verbo is one of the most expected Spanish film of the year. A mixture of adventure, dark fantasy, interior drama, and hip-hop aesthetics. It is the directorial debut of Eduardo Chapero-Jackson, filmaker winner of the Fénix Award from the European Film Academy for his short film Alumbramiento. The powerful, unusual and surprising score is composed by Pascal Gaigne (Gordos, Castillos de cartón, Omertá, 80 Egunean), representing a major shift register on his musical style. Wild tribal percussions, electronic ambiences, electric guitar and hip-hop rhythms are assembled with the sound of the superb musicians of the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, creating an electrifying and captivating musical atmosphere.

Richard Mitchell's Moby Dick

<![CDATA[ Alhambra Records has released the score for Moby Dick. In the expensive - 18 million Euro - remake of the classic Moby Dick, Captain Ahab is this time played by William Hurt. The role of the first Officer is played by Ethan Hake. The director is Mike Barker, who also has filmed Der Seewolf. At his side again is Richard Mitchell, who also wrote the music for Der Seewolf. The maritime music of more than 70 minutes was recorded with the Chaigley Symphony Orchestra and Choir. The music is a dense atmospheric music that feels like the listener him/herself is on the high seas, hunting Moby Dick. At the end of the more than 72-minute CD, there is the folk tune "Lowlands." This is film music in his best style that also works well without seeing the film.

The score is available from Amazon.com, Amazon UK, Amazon France and Amazon Germany.

Dmitry Shostakovich's New Babylon

<![CDATA[ Naxos Music has released in their Film Music Classics series a new recording of New Babylon (Noviy Vavilon). This recording of New Babylon, one of Dmitry Shostakovich’s most inventive and truly symphonic film scores, is the first complete recording of all the surviving music from the original ‘lost’ manuscript full score and the first to use five solo string players only, as conceived by the composer. A remarkable collage of marches, can-cans, carnival music, tumultuous rhythms and musical quotations, New Babylon bristles with witty dissonance and brassy ebullience, emphasizing the film’s content rather than its visual surface. Mark Fitz-Gerald’s two previous Naxos world première recordings of Shostakovich’s film scores for Alone and The Girlfriends have been highly acclaimed. This is a 2 CD-set.

Georges Delerue Partitions Inédites / Unused Scores

<![CDATA[ From Universal Music France comes Georges Delerue Partitions Inédites / Unused Scores. Fans of Georges Delerue have long hungered to hear these two rejected scores: Regarding Henry (1991) and Something Wicked This Way Comes (1982). The actual scoring sessions for each clocked in at around an hour each, so it was with great trepidation that we listened to this disc which runs a little over an hour for BOTH scores. Regarding Henry presents mostly the best tracks and with excellent sound, apparently culled from the Paramount vault. Delerue has written very wistful music which the studio rejected for, perhaps, not accurately mirroring Henry's personality change. Something Wicked This Way Comes also salvages most of the best cues, including some electronic effects and interesting " stings ". However the music comes to us from Delerue's own personal library copy - which we're advised in the notes, is " the only form in which the score survived, after refusal." Hence we're not listening to studio vault copies here, and so the music quality is mostly acceptable.

Daniel Pemberton's The Awakening

<![CDATA[ From Screamworks Records comes the score for The Awakening. Starring Rebecca Hall and Dominic West and opening in UK theatres on November 11, Nick Murphy’s supernatural thriller created a lot of buzz during the Toronto Film Festival where Studiocanal sold the US distribution rights to Cohen Media Group for “a seven-figure sum” according to Variety. The film takes place in 1921 England and is a ghost story where the storytelling and visuals is beautifully underlined by a large, gothic orchestral score composed by Daniel Pemberton, who won the 2010 Ivor Novello Award for Best Television Soundtrack (Desperate Romantics). Dark orchestral sonorities, haunting vocals and elements of almost operatic choir writing form the backbone of the this thorouoghly elegant and engaging score. Particularly memorable is “The Awakening Theme” which is used throughout the score, an instantly memorable arpeggio motif that has the same effective ‘hook’ as many of the most famous horror scores in the history of film music. The first edition of the CD is limited to 1000 copies.

Danny Elfman's Real Steel

<![CDATA[ Varèse Sarabande has released the score for Real Steel, a gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone high-tech. The movie stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback. Real Steel is directed by Shawn Levy (Night At The Museum franchise and Date Night). In a score that mixes guitar with symphony orchestra and choir, composer Danny Elfman returns to cinemas with this Fall action blockbuster.

The score is available from Amazon.com, Amazon UK, Amazon France and Amazon Germany. ]]>
