    One not to miss
by Kim (May 17, 2007)
Deepstar Six was not what you would call a smashing box office sucess. Sandwhiched in with other "sea" movies of the late 80's /early 90's (notably "Leviathan" and "The Abyss") it sort of was overlooked and understandably so. The effects were at best cheesy and the cast labored under some terrible dialogue. However, Deepstar had its upside in an intriguing plot twist (never trust a twitchy crew member) and a memorable score by Henry Manfredini.
The cd starts off with one of the most elegant pieces in a long time "Main Title"..elegant perhaps being an understatement..the score is so delicate it is reminiscent of Williams "Spacecamp". "Shock Wave" is a nice action piece with some good horn usage, "On the edge" nicely holds your attention but the real payoffs come late in the cd with "The saga of Osborne and Hodges" and especially the final track simply titled "Deepstar Six". This piece should have had a longer life than just 3 minutes, 4 seconds- it is nicely layered with various themes echoed slightly throughout the cd and a wonderful sense of the ocean and its wonders.
It is my understanding this is somewhat of a difficult cd to obtain. I would strongly suggest it to all collectors looking to broaden their horizons from the standard "Star Wars" type of fare and that it's worth the hunt to find. For those who can't swing the large price tag I often see on this cd..there is always the dvd!
    Beautiful work,

Weither you like "Deepstar Six", one of the many late-eighties sea-creatures opuses as a movie or not, there is no denying that Harry Manfredini has crafted a beautiful, rich score for the picture. Though famous for his generic-as-hell "chee-chee-cha-cha" Friday the 13th score, his work here shows his creative side, employing the use of a vast orchestra that matches the film's atmosphere perfectly.
Beautiful work, and highly recommended.
