DeVol's CHARLOTTE finally gets a soundtrack release!
by filmfactsman (October 13, 2005)
I have waited for this beautiful, haunting Frank DeVol score for what seems like an eternity. It was never issued on LP, despite the fact that the film's distributor, 20th Century Fox, had their own record label at the time and released the soundtracks to the studio's "Zorba the Greek" (Mikis Theodorikas), "What a Way to Go!" (Nelson Riddle), "Goodbye Charlie" (Andre Previn) and "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines" (Ron Goodwin) around the same 1964-65 period that the film "Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte" was released. What's even more surprising was the fact that two of the film's seven Academy Award nominations were for the score and the hit title song (with lyrics by Mack David). DeVol's music for "Charlotte" is expertly tailored to a film filled with mystery, suspense and sheer terror. His music is a perfect reflection of the spooky atmosphere and sudden shocks that permeates throughout. Melodic themes and tense, terse scoring reflects plot development and the personalities of the characters in this classic film.
Recently, FOX HOME VIDEO released a DVD of the film presented in widescreen format. This long-awaited CD should make an excellent companion piece to the DVD. I now hope to see a debut release of DeVol's score from the other classic Robert Aldrich/Bette Davis horror film, "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" (1962).
