Bargain Basement Bond With A Score To Spy For!
by
filmfactsman (April 29, 2006)
"Hammerhead" proudly stands alongside "Harlow" (Carroll Baker version), "Valley of the Dolls", "Mister Buddwing" and about a dozen others in my "Sixties guilty pleasures" film collection. A true "guilty pleasure" for me is a film (and I use the term loosely) that you can watch over and over again and still feel good in the morning. The late, great Vince Edwards (so memorable in Kubrick's "The Killing") plays an American secret agent working in London (Scotland Yard must be desperate for good agents) out to crack an international plot involving plans to a nuclear defense system (what else!). But it's the women in his "spy life" that really make this movie come alive: Judy "To Sir With Love" Geeson, Beverly "How to Stuff a Wild Bikini" Adams and the legendary Diana Dors (who one British wag once referred to as "forgotten but not gone"). One of the best things about the film is the sensational score by the much underrated David Whitaker. It took me years to find the Colgems soundtrack album and I never get tired of listening to it nor of watching the VHS tape of the movie. British '60s songbird Madeline Bell ("I'm Gonna Make You Love Me") does a magnificent job of performing the title track and Martin Goldstein's "Hammerhead Concerto" is brilliant. I doubt if it'll happen but I'd love to see both a legitimate DVD of the film and a CD of the score get released soon. Wishful thinking?
