Experimental Lalo
by
Brandon Moore (March 27, 2003)
Film Score Monthly's Silver Age Classics has released Lalo Schifrin's score to "THX 1138" for the first time. This is every cue in the film presented with great sound quality. The score functions on different levels with experimental music and source tracks. I mostly enjoy Schifrin's experimental tracks on the album. There are some fascinating musical timbres explored in the percussion music where Schifrin uses all kinds of ethnic instruments. The choral tracks remind me a little of 2001. The highlight of the album is LUH where Schifrin uses exotic scales for a theme on flute and harp. I had seen the film aired recently on AMC and thought this would make a great album for FSM to put out. It's great to see FSM continuing to release these avant-garde scores of the 1970s. The CD is a limited edition of 3000 copies.
