Still don't know why this film bombed...
by a soundtrack collector (July 14, 2003)
Not only did Paul Williams write a fantastic score for this oddball little film, but the movie itself was pretty good too. Remains an enigma to me as to the reason it bombed.... Thankfully the same sort of audience who embraced "Rocky Horror" also found this film and have kept it alive.
As for the soundtrack, the songs rank right up there with all of the top 10 radio hits that Williams wrote during that period. He evoked the '50s greaser sound perfectly in "Goodbye, Eddie;" the Beach-Boys bubblegum in "Upholstery;" the Partridge Family bubblegum in "Special to Me;" and the Alice Cooper rock in "Somebody Super Like You." Pretty wide spectrum for a guy who's best known for writing half of the Carpenters' catalogue.
While I give the album five stars for what is present, I'm disappointed by what's not. None of the illustrious score has ever been available on any form of disc, which is a real shame. In addition to the score, another brief song byte, "Never thought I'd get to meet the Devil...." is also missing, which William Finley sang far better than the vocal he turned in on "Faust." I'd love to see a special edition released with the complete soundtrack and score, but it wouldn't be wise to hold my breath.
