The CD release of Another Classic Donaggio Score is Upon Us!
by filmfactsman (July 28, 2005)
"The Howling" marked the seventh English language feature film scored by Pino Donaggio, following his earlier successes that included "Don't Look Now", "Carrie", "Piranha", "Tourist Trap", "Home Movies" and "Dressed to Kill". Donaggio's film music in this period obviously exhibited the influences of Bernard Herrmann's symphonic orchestrations, but the thematic constructions were uniquely his own. His exotic orchestrations shared with Herrmann a feel for the bizarre and unexpected so he seemed to be the logical successor to Herrmann's reign over the fantasy and suspense idiom in film music.
The long-awaited CD release of "The Howling" after a nearly twenty-five year delay has always been a puzzle to me. There was even a petition to get this soundtrack released on CD:
To Copyright Owners Of "The Howling" Original Motion Picture Soundtrack:
We, the undersigned, wish to express our great interest in a Compact Disc (CD) release of “The Howling” Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. For the sake of clarity, we specify that we are referring to the (homonymous) film Joe Dante directed in 1980, whose original music was composed by the famous maestro Pino Donaggio. The prominent Varèse Sarabande Records Company released that soundtrack on Records and Tapes, back in 1981. However, it is out of print for years now and it became a collector’s item, as many related and regular online auctions that take place on a regular basis may prove so. We would highly welcome a new release, now on Compact Disc, and we believe that Horror Movies and Pino Donaggio fans also would enthusiastically do it.
Sincerely,

Incredible! And I thought petitions for soundtrack CD releases never really worked. I'm now enlightened and inspired. Now let's see what we can do about an American CD release of Donaggio's "Blow Out"!
