Though the success of the film was a little less than top quality, the film itself was without a doubt one of the best espionage films ever made. A factor that contributed to this was Pino Donaggio's beautifully haunting score. Streaked with shrieking violins to add to the string and woodwork create a haunting and melodic theme that to this day remains one of Donaggio's best. In the softer side of the music, Donaggio has composed a rich and enticing theme of romance and yet sadness for the film's prelude. Among the films notorious tunes Donaggio composes hard, rough, and jagged music that includes high screaming strings, big loud low blown horns, and a short beat of a drum. And the tunes following the evil character, Burke, Donaggio has allowed his senses to completely go all out in a wicked but tasteful manner. The score in a whole is nothing short of a miraculous score. The cues are well thought out and conducted exquisitly. The score was never available in the U.S. or Europe. Only in Japan on a poorly pressed bogus label until it was released promotionally in 1998, and now finally released limited on Prometheus Records. All movie music fans should at least have heard it to believe it! One of Donaggio's best!
