    Wonderful,
by Alex (April 15, 2007)
"Jacob's Ladder" is to Jarre what "The Omen" was to Goldsmith. That's just how great this score is. The main theme, a beautifully rendered piano motif, deserves to be a fmaous film theme. It's great stuff. The album is broken down into five lengthy suites (plus Al Johnson's "Sonny Boy" as an odd album closer), each self-contained, yet the score evolves throughout. Jarre injects into the score both light and dark choral passages for male and female chorus, ethnic woodwinds and flutes, dense (and very effective) electronic passages, and even a beautiful solo for what sounds like a small Erhu (Chinese violin) ensemble during the 3rd track. The final two or three minutes of "The Ladder" is fantastic, at which the main theme is restated with full orchestra and chorus, soaring into a beautiful crescendo. It's a gorgeous passage of music, and the best on this album. If you are looking for hopeful, scary, intricate, down-beat, uplifting and beautiful music (all at once!), this score is HIGHLY recommended. Excellent stuff!
