The Wraith -- a sleeper Rock classic
by
Mark J. Cairns (May 14, 2003)
The Wraith was one of those films in 1986 that one either loved or hated. Personally I was sucked in from the first time I saw the trailer. When I eventually tracked down the holographic covered VHS tape it got played & rented over and over. Ahh, the joys of a perfect Stereo LaserDisc copy nowadays! The music, was standard American Ordinary Rock, so beloved by films at the time such as 'TOP GUN' and 'IRON EAGLE', but it was the choice of the tracks to literally drive the action scenes which was the hook for most folks. This was the film that started Charlie Sheen and Sherilyn Fenn's career and helped boost Randy Quaid's but it was the musicians and rock stars on the soundtrack that were helped pushed to superstardom. Tim Feehan and Ozzy Osbourne are the two artists who are promoted most often from this release, and Tim Feehan's closing theme song, "Where's the Fire" must be one of the best AOR tracks ever to come out of the mid-80s, and the main reason I'm sure that this soundtrack commands the levels that it does. Prices on eBay have been upwards of $500 for the Japanese + German versions of the soundtrack which were the only versions to be released on CD. It was released in 1986 by Scotti Bros on LP. I remember searching (pre-Internet + eBay) at the time for nearly two years and paid about $75 for a mint LP at the time. Money well spent. Little did I realise what a collectible it would become. Find one if you can. It's great.
