A little disappointed with the CD release
by
Vinnie Rattolle (July 13, 2003)
I stumbled onto the CD release of this soundtrack quite on accident and was glad to find it, since it was one of my childhood favorites. However.... Some of the vocals are quite different from what appears in the film, and an extra verse is included in "I Saw a Dragon," though these differences aren't at all unusual in film soundtracks (and having known the LP for so long, I expected these differences).

Although there's far more clarity than on my scratchy old record, they left a song off the CD completely! Both the original LP release and the CD feature 2 versions of Reddy's ballad "Candle on the Water," however there's a different version on each, making 3 released versions. The version that appears in the film (running 3:05) appears on both the CD & LP releases, but they opted for an abridged version as the reprise for the CD. The original LP featured a much faster full-length version of the song which ran 2:36, and they cited the 3:05 version as the reprise. I was hoping to get the fast version on CD as well. Enough griping about my confusion on this matter... My other major gripe is that they left the beautiful award-winning score off of the CD. Obviously a clean copy of the score exists somewhere or they couldn't have remastered the DVD so well, but it's irritating that they chose to leave it off the CD release (as was the same case with "Bedknobs and Broomsticks"). Nor did they bother to include the finale reprise of "I Saw a Dragon/Brazzle Dazzle Day" which appeared in the film, but never made it to any version of the soundtrack. I'm annoyed that Disney doesn't put forth more of an effort with their re-releases, many of which would be better if they'd turn them over to Rhino for releasing. Plus I really miss the original cover/sleeve art that went with this album.

A- on sound quality and included content. F on extras.
