A rare gem
by a soundtrack collector (July 14, 2003)
One question immediately comes to mind when thinking of the soundtrack for "The Pirate Movie:" Why hasn't it been released on CD?? Come on, even the soundtrack for the awful Bee Gees version of "Sgt. Pepper" is on CD! Another of those movies that flopped but found a cult audience via cable, the spoof of "The Pirates of Penzance" only had one release of the soundtrack -- which now goes for megabucks on auction sites.

The bubblegum pop songs performed by Kristy McNichol and Chris Atkins are pure '80s pop at its best, and it's a wonder that neither "First Love" nor "Pumpin' and Blowin'" never found their way to the radio. The rewritten Gilbert and Sullivan songs match the original numbers for pure campiness, and the addition of the the incidental pop songs and the score (in most releases) make this double-album a true gem, even for those who like '80s pop but didn't care for the film.
