Marco Polo Does It Again!!!
by
Thomas Kiefner (August 11, 2002)
The latest release from Marco Polo features five mini soundtracks from the composer Adolph Deutsch, who I was totally unaware of until I purchased this CD. As part of the ongoing series, John Morgan does the restorations, and the music is played by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra conducted by William Stromberg. My favorite of the five films is "The Maltese Falcon." It has a simple eight note theme that is used several times during the film and perfectly fits the dark nature of this early noir film. My second favorite is "The Mask Of Dimitrios." This is probably because it is very similiar in nature to"The Maltese Falcon." From the liner notes you can read that "The Mask of Dimitrios" had a much higher budget and this allowed Adolph a larger orchestra to work with, which permitted him to do more with the score. Even the score "George Washington Slept Here" has its moments, and I would have thought before listening that this would not be of interest to me. The film "High Sierra," a early Bogart film, and "Northern Pursuit" round out the CD. "High Sierra" is probably the most melodic of the five. All of them have the wonderful flavor of the Warner Brothers films when Max Steiner headed the music department. I get the feeling that he may have put the finishing touches onto the scores. I would highly recommend this CD to your collection, as I would with all of the Marco Polo series. It is a way to expand your collection into areas of the past, from composers we are not as familiar with, and as a bonus be able to listen to them in modern recordings.
