Jazzy-influences highlight this dated disaster film score by Jeffery (May 2, 2003)
This is the second installment in John Williams' disaster film trilogy (after 'The Poseidon Adventure' and prior to 1974's 'The Towering Inferno') and perhaps, his weakest. Although the themes are certainly memorable (the bombastic "Main Title" and the sugar sweet "Love Theme"), they are unfortunately dated for Mark Robson's mishmash production. However, there are some classic Williams moments: "City Theme" is a melancholy blues song--an unusual take on the title music; the 5 note meshing on the "The City Sleeps" is simply evocative. Yet, it's difficult to ignore the mediocre tracks: "Something For Rosa" is pure elevator music, while "Miles on Wheels" and the thundering low piano keys on "Cory In Jeopardy" are gimmicky 70s cheese. The Sensurround-'Earthquake' effects on the tail end of the album may attract fans of this cult genre, but otherwise it is just grating background noise.
