Two L.P.s From This Hardboiled Classic Proves That It's All Sweet!
by a soundtrack collector (April 5, 2006)

Another set of exceptional recordings taken from the score of a motion picture and originally released on the United Artist label.

"Odds Against Tomorrow", directed by Robert Wise (I Want To Live) features a score composed by John Lewis, founder of the Modern Jazz Quartet and performed on the films soundtrack by full orchestra conducted by Gunther Schuller.

Dramatic and well executed music from one of the leading voices in the world of jazz the score is in a league of it's own. Dark, brooding and tense with perfect timing enhancing the story of a bank heist gone bad and the trio of desperate players doomed from birth!

The original soundtrack recording features a well designed jacket offering graphics from the original poster art and the orchestral score with the MJQ as featured solists while a second release (Patterns) is a recording of themes from the film performed by the quartet alone (Percy Heath, Milt Jackson, Connie Kay and John Lewis) and was offered with two alternate covers. One an impressionistic design, the other a scene from the film with Harry Belafonte waiting nervously by the dirty polluted waterway for the heist to unfold.

A proud moment in the history of film music! *****
