In defense of Harry...

I can't argue that I am a John Williams fan. Its obvious fact. However, Patrick Doyle did do a very nice job following in some very large shoes. As with each movie, each soundtrack is unique, and perhaps one should not be judged against another.

Patrick Doyle has outdone himself here. This is a masterful work with many different themes for each and every colorful main Potter character. Some of the pieces not to be missed if you are sampling: The Quidditch World Cup (the Bulgarian's team theme is just outstanding), Neville's Waltz (just a wonderful light piece of work for one of the most humorous portions of the movie and a real fleshing out of Neville Longbottom's character) and last but most important, The Black Lake. This scene was masterfully done on screen and the score really adds to both the horror of the test and the seriousness of the situation. This scene to me was truly the greatest test Harry ever had to face and the horror of realizing just WHAT was in the Black Lake is relived again and again with this track. Brilliant as Ron would say!

By all means, don't overlook this score just because John Williams did not create it. This one can hold its own.

Harry isn't the only thing to grow up in this film...

Ok, let me just start by saying i am a huge fan of John Williams' Harry Potter film scores - in particular his score to "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" and was very annoyed that they were bringing in Patrick Doyle to score "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", having heard anly a tiny bit of his work beforehand, and, yet - i reserved judgement, and i am glad that i did, because, it has to be said that this score is a lot darker and more grown up than the previous "Harry Potter" scores, from the Opening "The Story Continues" to the closing "Hogwart's Hymn", there is not one single track i did not like, and i like the fact that what seems to be the theme for the character of Lord Voldemort does creep into a lot of the tracks - to great effect. The tracks most worth noting (in my opinion) are:

The Dark Mark
The Goblet of Fire
Rita Skeeter - a very neat little fluffy piece
Sirius Fire
Harry sees Dragons
Voldemort
Hogwarts Hymn

however, as i said, the whole score is a treat for old and new "Potter" music fans, and, for once, it is very good that we saw a change of composers, because Patrick Doyle has breathed new life into Harry Potter music, and rose to the monumentous challenge of taking the reigns over from John Williams fantastically. My only hope is that Patrick Doyle gets another shot and is commissioned to score "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix". Great stuff.

Oh how excited was I to find this on the release date on iTunes. Happily did I plunk down my hard-earned $14.99. Then reality set in: the music is awful. By Patrick Doyle (of Donnie Brasco fame, a memorable score to anyone out there?), it certainly does nothing to evoke the previous 3 films. this is even more disappointing after the magnificent score John Williams wrote for HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban last year. The last 3 tracks are truly dreadful.
