More an atmosphere piece than a score,
by
Alex (August 8, 2006)
Christopher Young took an interesting approach to scoring this film in that his music is very non-'score' like. Instead, it kinda reminds me of the Atmosphere tracks heard in "2001: A space Oddysey"--there is no real central theme, just evocative background ambience. Many of the tracks feature some very lovely choral work (such as 1, 4-7, 8-12, and 14), but aside from that, there's no real theme. The piano echos solemnly here, violins slither and slide there, Ominous woodwinds (or maybe Oboes? Contrabassoons? I'm no expert) drone along in the background; the score is occasionally punctuated by orchestral mayhem as the horror unravels on-screen.
With a little over an hour worth of music this score is fairly hard to digest. Listen to this several times to feel its full effect. And again, this score works better when listened to as a mood piece, not a real 'score'. Interesting work.
