Haunting score by Anne Dudley
by weepstah (January 30, 2006)
I find myself listening to this soundtrack often, but as far as I'm concerned it really starts at track 11, when the score part of the soundtrack kicks in. Anne Dudley is well known for her work with The Art of Noise, and she does a terrific job in a "straight" orchestral composition, weaving the main theme in and out of several cuts. Sad music, which is used quite effectively in the movie to echo Stephen Rea's melancholy and guilt, and also adds tension to several scenes (in particular, "The Assasination").
Unfortunately, most of the attention for this film and the music was diverted to Dil's shocking surprise and torch song versions of several old standards. The best known of these is of course Boy George's version of The Crying Game. While these covers offer a mild amount of interest, it's the orchestral score that keeps me coming back for another listen.
Recommended.
