Cool & unusual, but not for everybody!
by
Alex (August 7, 2006)
Tomandandy are not composer(s?) I'm familiar with. While watching the 2006 splatter film/subtle political satire I kept thinking to myself, "hmm, interesting music". I purchased the CD, somewhat regrettably at a high price, but now that I own it I can say I am proud I have this score in my collection and say it was worth every penny!
I didn't really like the first 9 tracks on the album (band songs--not my taste), but track 10-29 is pure score, and damn good at that!
"Forbidden Zone" introduces us to our grungy and unusual bad guy theme. 11-14 are ambient pieces that are enjoyable but not terribly memorable, and while following the same pattern in tracks 15-18, these pieces introduce new themes (including a minimalistic acoustic theme for our good guys). Track 19, "Aftermath", displays some nice gentle strings. 20 begins the same way, then gives away to an awesome electronic beat. "Next Morning" is an interesting collection of rattling and brooding sound effects. "Village Test" begins with the acoustic theme but soon rises into fairly stirring orchestral movements. "Breakfast Time" is one of the longer tracks, which begins with the tolkein electronics but then rises to, surprisingly, large choral movements. A heroic theme is introdued in "Play With Us", and carries itself through the rest of the disc, finally exploding into fullness with the concluding track, "It's Over?".
This score is unique in that most electronic/ambient/semi-orchestral scores may have some very nice indivisual tracks, but as a whole don't really work on album (see Johnny Klimek & Reinhold Heil's 2005 score for "The Cave"), but Tomanaandy's work here is completely satisfying as a whole, making this score an entirely enjoyable listening experience that never becomes to bombastic nor too redundant; it satisfies from beginning to end. There's very little real "ambience" aside from tracks 11-14, as most of the pieces are comprised of the various themes (kick-ass bad guy theme, acoustic good guy theme, heroic orchestral theme, etc.), which are often modified using various instruments and/or compositions.
A unique, cool, non-"musical" work, Tomandandy's "The Hills Have Eyes" score is a winner in my book. This score may not be for everyone--some may see it as pure noise--but as a score fan open to everything, I can say I was very impressed!
Highly recommended!
