    Decent score for okay movie
by Michael Longstreet (May 14, 2008)
Reminiscent of his other works (Mission: Impossible III, The Incredibles), Michael Giacchino brings this score to its height during the racing sequences. There are great action sequences with tracks like “Bumper to Bumper, Rail to Rail,” and “32 Hours,” but he also provides great melodic moments with great tracks like “He Ain’t Heavy,” and “Racing’s In Our Blood.”
Instead of having individual tracks, the songs seem to blend from one to the other. It is difficult to listen to one entire track on its own, as it will cutoff, because it leads entirely into the next one. Each track should stand alone. If it’s too long, then just make it a longer single track. It was my complaint about John Powell’s score to X-Men: The Last Stand as well.
At times, the Speed Racer album seems too melodic for the story’s subject matter. Having actually not seen this film, it was a little difficult to relate the music to the movie, but I got the overall idea. The ending track, simply entitled “Speed Racer,” has a camp sound to it, reminding us that it’s a kid’s film and not to take it too seriously. This track actually has the classic words that go along with the original series’ theme song. The album can’t seem to make up its mind as to what style of music it wants to feature. It’s not bad, but it’s not great either.
