Dark and elegant,
by Alex (August 21, 2007)
It’s rare that you get a quality Stephen King adaptation, rarer still that it exceeds the original written material of his, rarer still that is should be a Made-for-Cable flick with an orchestral score as large and encompassing as this one. Composer Brian Keane is a stranger to me, and after hearing this I can’t help but wonder why. This is a dark, big, gothic as hell horror score in the vein of Marco Beltrami or Christopher Young. “The Night Flier” opens the score with ominous electronics before giving away to a superbly mysterious and haunting piano motif that is to be the backbone for the score. The cue really takes off once the theme is picked up by full orchestra. It is reprised again in “Dee’s Journey Begins”, as well as several other crucial points in the film. Track like “Claire” offer an array of dark and chilling electronics, while “working Together” takes a somewhat lighter approach to the main theme. “Show me Your Face!” takes the main theme into an elegant sweep that nears crescendo, and “Katherine’s Theme” finishes off the score with a nicely satisfying departure from the main theme.
This is a solid horror score and RCA Victor’s generous release offers almost a full hour of music. Dig it!
