A classy score

Jane Eyre- a title you probably never wanted to hear outside of English Lit and Comp..ah well. While there have been many film interpretations of Jane Eyre (each with its pluses and drawbacks) this particular version stands out in its sincere and undecorated view of the title character.

Jane's theme is much like the character herself, plain, unassuming and full of promise. It is an elegant piece in and of its simplicity. It filters in and out of almost all tracks on the cd, a constant reminder of the main subject. Interwoven with it are the wonderful themes for Mr. Rochester, Thornfield Hall, Bertha Mason and Lowood School.

There are two particular tracks which caught my notice. Track 6 is the theme for Thornfield Hall, home of the brooding, dark and enigmatic Mr. Rochester. However, the theme is light- it dances like a Ravel's Sympathetique Waltz or Sarde's love theme in "Ghost Story". It is a wonderful piece and not to be missed.

The second is track 11- Blanche's arrival. Beautifully shot in the film, this track scores the moment that Jane realizes the heights of her aspirations and hopes of winning Mr. Rochester's heart. With the arrival of the stunningly beautiful, wealthy and educated Blanche Ingram, Jane is thrown into the arena of female competition- and the score draws the battle lines with precision and authority. You have a tangible sense of the rivalry between the two women.

While not a classic in every sense, this cd is an excellent version of a gothic score- dark, mysterious and yet elegant.
